Bottled Water Vs. Tap Water: Rethink What You Drink

Hi everybody, here is an article I came across recently written by Samantha Hemmingway. Just a little food, or should I say drink, for thought:

Remember the drinking fountain, that once ubiquitous, and free, source of H2O? It seems quaint now. Instead, bottled water is everywhere, in offices, airplanes, stores, homes and restaurants across the country. We consumed over eight billion gallons of the stuff in 2006, a 10 percent increase from 2005. It’s refreshing, calorie-free, convenient to carry around, tastier than some tap water and a heck of a lot healthier than sugary sodas. But more and more, people are questioning whether the water, and the package it comes in, is safe, or at least safer than tap water—and if the convenience is worth the environmental impact.

What’s in That Bottle?
Evocative names and labels depicting pastoral scenes have convinced us that the liquid is the purest drink around. “But no one should think that bottled water is better regulated, better protected or safer than tap,” says Eric Goldstein, co-director of the urban program at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a nonprofit organization devoted to protecting health and the environment.

Yes, some bottled water comes from sparkling springs and other pristine sources. But more than 25 percent of it comes from a municipal supply. The water is treated, purified and sold to us, often at a thousandfold increase in price. Most people are surprised to learn that they’re drinking glorified tap water, but bottlers aren’t required to list the source on the label.

This year Aquafina will begin stating on labels that its H2O comes from public water sources. And Nestlé Pure Life bottles will indicate whether the water comes from public, private or deep well sources. Dasani acknowledges on its website, but not on the label itself, that it draws from local water.

Labels can be misleading at best, deceptive at worst. In one notorious case, water coming from a well located near a hazardous waste site was sold to many bottlers. At least one of these companies labeled its product “spring water.” In another case, H2O sold as “pure glacier water” came from a public water system in Alaska.

Lisa Ledwidge, 38, of Minneapolis, stopped drinking bottled water a couple of years ago, partly because she found out that many brands come from a municipal supply. “You’re spending more per gallon than you would on gasoline for this thing that you can get out of the tap virtually for free,” she says. “I wondered, Why am I spending this money while complaining about how much gas costs? But you don’t ever hear anyone complain about the price of bottled water.” Ledwidge says she now drinks only filtered tap water.

So I agree that it is best to drink water you have filtered yourself, that’s what I do.

Also, many of you have asked about alkalized water and its benefits. I have run into many people who have gotten great results drinking alkalized water. One of my practice members is an expert when it comes to this type water so if you’d like to know more please feel free to contact him.

Take a Time Out…

The Tiny Timeout

Whenever I try to teach people something they can add to their daily life that will help them they always say “but Doc, I don’t have time to do anything”.

That’s our main problem. Our lives are filled with way too much stuff!

No matter how busy your life is  everybody has at least 1 minute a day they can spare.

This is a great way to start living in the moment & getting your body, mind & spirit some relaxation it so badly needs.

You can do this almost anywhere & anytime.

Just take a minute, 60 seconds & get in a relaxed position, shut your eyes & focus all your attention on your breathing.

Breathe a full breath in through your nose filling your lungs, letting your belly expand. Now hold the breath for just a moment then breathe out through your mouth.

Just keep all your attention on your breathing.

When all those thoughts try to come into your head just bring your focus back to your breathing.

Keep this up for a minute & you’ll change your nervous system from the crazy fight or flight side over to the calming relaxed, healing side – where it should be the majority of the time!

You can also choose to do this exercise for more than a minute & more than once a day too!

If you make this a daily ritual you’ll become a more relaxed, happy, healthy & productive camper.

See you at your next adjustment,

Kyle

So maybe milk doesn’t do a body that much good after all.

Hi all, interesting article here from the BBC news:

According to a study of 107,000 Swedish adults published in the medical journal BMJ, a diet rich in milk could have detrimental health consequences.

“We observed a dose-dependent higher rate of both mortality and fracture in women and a higher rate of mortality in men with milk intake, a pattern not discerned with other dairy products,” the authors write in a 22 September report on their findings.

Women who drank three or more glasses of milk a day, for instance, were 93% more likely to have died during the study period, which ranged from 13 to 22 years.

They conclude that the findings “question the validity” of the long-held belief that drinking milk has net health benefits, although they caution that further research is needed.

There’s just not a lot of evidence supporting dairy industry claims that drinking milk is good for you, writes Indiana University School of Medicine Prof Aaron E Carroll for the New York Times.

“More than 10,000 years ago, when human beings began to domesticate animals, no adults or older children consumed milk,” he writes. “Many people don’t drink it today because they are lactose intolerant. They do just fine.”

There appears to be scant evidence that calcium in milk helps prevent osteoporosis and improve bone strength. And while milk is full of protein, he continues, most Americans get plenty of the nutrient in their diets already. What they don’t need, he says, are calories – which milk has in abundance, to the tune of 83 a cup.

“In an era when every other caloric beverage is being marginalized because of obesity concerns, it’s odd that milk continues to get a pass,” he writes.

Why? He says politics is part of the reason. The US government spends millions on advertising campaigns for the dairy industry, which wholeheartedly supports the efforts.

Luisa Dillner of the Guardian cautions that it’s too early to kick the milk habit, however. She says the study is based on sometimes unreliable self-reporting, Swedish environment and health practices may be different in the UK and other parts of the world, and there’s no concrete proof of a link.

There are also the unintended health consequences of abandoning milk. For instance, as Sandra Walsh of the Daily Mail writes, the recent decline in UK milk consumption likely has led to an uptick in cases of iodine deficiency, since many Brits get the vital substance from cow’s milk. Unlike the US and Canada, the British government does not mandate adding iodine to salt products.

“Nutritional guidelines are unlikely to change in the short term until there is more direct evidence on the long-term effects of liberal milk drinking,” Dillner writes. “The phrase ‘more research is needed’ was invented for questions such as this.”

The one thing I do know is if you’re going to drink milk get it raw (an increasingly tougher thing to find these days) Once it is pasteurized it is now a dead food with more detrimental than helpful properties.

See you at your next adjustment,

Kyle

Ebola – Another viewpoint

Hi all, I do feel a responsibility to get other viewpoints and info out to you other than what the media and the governmental agencies are saying.

If you don’t look at all sides of an issue and really take the time to investigate than how can you make an educated decision?

I have always said don’t take anybody’s word (mine included) without doing your due diligence to check the information out.

On that note here is a link to an interesting article from Dr Tim O’Shea concerning this whole Ebola thing. I hope you find it worth your while to check out:

Eat your Pasta and Lose Weight!

Hot off The Presses: A Brand New Strategy That Let’s You Eat Your Favorite Pasta And Still Lose The Fat!

Many food-lovers worry about pasta making them fat. But could simply cooling and then reheating your meal make it better for you?

You may know that pasta is a carbohydrate, and like all carbohydrates it gets broken down in your guts and then absorbed as simple sugars, which in turn makes your blood glucose soar.

In response to this surge in blood glucose our bodies produce a rush of the hormone insulin to get your blood glucose back down to normal as swiftly as possible, because persistently high levels of glucose in the blood are extremely unhealthy.

A rapid rise in blood glucose, followed by a rapid fall, can often make you feel hungry again quite soon after a meal. It’s true of sugary sweets and cakes, but it’s also true for things like pasta, potatoes, white rice and white bread. That’s why usually we emphasize the importance of eating foods that are rich in fiber, as these foods produce a much more gradual rise and fall in your blood sugars.

But what if you could change pasta or potatoes into a food that, to the body, acts much more like fiber? Well, it seems you can. Cooking pasta and then cooling it down changes the structure of the pasta, turning it into something that is called “resistant starch”.

It’s called “resistant starch” because once pasta, potatoes or any starchy food is cooked and cooled it becomes resistant to the normal enzymes in our gut that break carbohydrates down and releases glucose that then causes the familiar blood sugar surge.

So, according to scientist Dr Denise Robertson, from the University of Surrey, if you cook and cool pasta down then your body will treat it much more like fiber, creating a smaller glucose peak and helping feed the good bacteria that reside down in your gut. You will also absorb fewer calories, making this a win-win situation.

One obvious problem is that many people don’t really like cold pasta. So what would happen if you took the cold pasta and warmed it up?

Testing was done and so what did happen?

Amazingly it was found that cooking, cooling and then reheating the pasta had an even more dramatic effect. Or, to be precise, an even smaller effect on blood glucose.

In fact, it reduced the rise in blood glucose by 50%!!!

This means that reheating the pasta made it into an even more “resistant starch”. It’s an extraordinary result and one never measured before.

So now you can turn your favorite decadent pasta into a more healthy fiber-loaded meal without changing a single ingredient, just the temperature. In other words your leftovers can now be healthier for you than the original meal. Eat your pasta and still lose fat, awesome!

See you at your next adjustment!

Kyle
